September 2007 ....
Message from the President
Welcome back everyone, and especially those new members who joined over the summer
months, to another year of friendship and fun with Newcomers!! Some of our activities have
continued over the summer while others have not, but beginning in September we will return to
a full calendar of events. I’m looking forward to hearing all about your summer holidays and to
making friends with new arrivals.
Let me say, right off the bat, “thank you” to last year’s executive board for a job well done. This
year’s board is a great group of women also and I’m looking forward to working with you.
If you have been a Newcomers member for a little while, you may notice some changes in our
activities. Some new things have been added (I hope to see many of you at our first President’s
Coffee) and some activities are still in need of a convenor. If you have an activity or hobby that
you would like to see become a group activity for Newcomers, you are probably not alone. Step
up and become a convenor—it’s easy and generally not very time-consuming—but gives you the
opportunity to meet other women who share your interest. If you have a new idea or want to
continue with an established interest group that needs a convenor, just give me a call.
Our September evening social will be a very important evening. Our regular monthly socials will
be on the third Wednesday of the month this year. But in September, we will meet on Monday,
the 24th, at the Riverbend Library. Hopefully this public venue will make it easy for women new
to the area to find us. Please be on time, as we can only have the room for an hour. This will be
your chance to sign up for any activities you are interested in. Afterwards, those who wish will
walk over to Second Cup for coffee and chit-chat(our forte).
Finally, on a sad note (for Newcomers Club), our Vice-President, Monique LaLonge is moving to
Windsor by the end of August. We send her and her family off with our best wishes, knowing
that her absence leaves a big hole in our Club. The office of Vice-President is an important one
and I hope to fill it quickly. The Vice-President’s duties include assisting the President and
taking over in her absence (I’ll try not to be absent much, I promise!). The Vice-President
usually takes on the position of Director of Convenors as well. While it is not automatic that the
Vice-President become President the following year, it makes a good progression and provides
continuity for the Board. This would be an ideal position for someone who has been a member
for 2 years or less to take on. This Club is only successful when you, the members, take
responsibility for it. Don’t think of this as a chore—being on the board is fun and a great way to
get to know some other women a little better. It’s also a way for you to “re-gift” the gift of
friendship you received from Newcomers when you were new. If you would like more info,
please feel free to call me and we’ll talk!!
Yours in friendship,
Amy Nelson |
